How to Measure Your Flange Size for Comfortable and Efficient Pumping
Finding the right flange size is key to making breastfeeding as comfortable and productive as possible. Using the wrong size can lead to discomfort, pain, and reduced milk output, so it’s worth taking the time to get this right! Here’s a simple guide to help you measure your flange size accurately:

Step 1: Measure Your Nipple Diameter
Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the width of your nipple (not the areola, which is the darker area around it) in millimeters.
Tip: 1 cm equals 10 mm, so if you see your nipple is 2 cm, that’s 20 mm!
Example: If your nipple measures 20 mm across, write that down.
Step 2: Add 4 mm to Your Measurement
Once you’ve measured the nipple, add 4 mm to find your ideal flange size.
Example: If your nipple measures 20 mm, adding 4 mm gives you a flange size of 24 mm.
Step 3: Check for Comfort During Pumping
A correctly sized flange allows only your nipple to move within the tunnel while avoiding too much pulling on the areola.
If you’re experiencing discomfort, try adjusting to a slightly larger or smaller size to see if it helps.
Step 4: Periodically Recheck Your Size
